We deliver organic vegan meals for two on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
mornings to homes and workplaces in much of San Francisco. Order must
be placed by 10am the day before delivery.

We will happily deliver one-time orders, but we encourage customers
to subscribe by ordering a number of meals in advance. The more you
eat with Food Chain, the more affordable it is. Food for subscribers
is delivered in a stainless steel Thai lunchbox called a pin-tho
for which you put down a refundable deposit. You get three pin-tho with
your name on them that will be rotated through your subscription. You
are responsible for cleaning and returning the pin-tho at the next delivery.

Where can I get a menu?
You can't. We don't publish one in advance because we get the freshest
fruits and vegetables directly from community supported farmers who
won't pick their beautiful, loved, organic produce until its peak. This
freshness -- you'll often be eating vegetables within 48 hours of when
they were harvested -- is the secret to Food Chain meals, and to your
nutrition.
Instead of a set menu, Chainletters
highlight what produce is ready to be picked at Bay Area farms that
you can expect in upcoming meals.
Some customers have been reluctant to order meals without knowing what
to expect, but most find that not only does this expand their tastes
and the variety of their diets, but that they enjoy the surprise of
each meal.
How much food is it?
Food Chain meals are enough for two people, or a lunch and a dinner,
or two lunches in a row.
Here's the raw numbers:
2 cups of starter (salad, soup, grilled vegetables, etc.)
4 cups of main course
2 cups of dessert (freshest fruit, Indian coconut fudge, chocolate almond
cake, etc.)
Here's the real-life meaning:

What if I'm not there to accept the delivery?
When you order, you should tell us what do to if you aren't available
to accept your meal. For instance, we can leave it with a coworker,
inside a front gate, or at a corner store.
We cannot offer refunds for meals we were unable to deliver. You may
be able to pick it up from us later in the day. You should contact
us as soon as possible, but we cannot guarantee pickups.
How do I get my deposit back?
On the next delivery day (Mon, Wed, or Fri) after your subscription
ends we will come to pick up any pin-tho that you still have and return
your deposit. We will come only once to pick up the pin-tho, and it
must be clean. If we are unable to pick them up, we will send you your
deposit back, minus $15 per unreturned pin-tho. You can contact
us and arrange to drop off the pin-tho and we will gladly refund
your deposit then.
How vegan is it?
We go by the strictest vegan standards. No honey or refined sugar,
no casein or lactose or whey or gelatin. We know and avoid all the usual
culprits.
Will I like this food? When you say, "vegan,"
I think, "brown rice and lentils."
For shame! Vegan food, just like any food, can be bland and boring.
Ours is not. Most of the great cuisines of the world depend on vegetables,
grains and the flavors of plants (herbs and spices), and Food Chain
indulges in them. Check out some past
menus to see.
How organic is it?
Nearly all the produce we use is certified organic. Sometimes we will
use "transitional" crops; most often that means food grown
organically on fields that have been organic for less than three years.
We also use organic oil, herbs and spices, flours, and just about everything
else. Occasionally we will use some canned conventional food in our
Asian meals. General consensus among the organics community is that
much of the Asian canned goods are functionally organic because growers
cannot afford pesticides and artificial fertilizers.
What about my food allergies?
We can accommodate many standard food allergies and sensitivities for
subscribers. Let us know what your allergies are, and we will tell you
what we can do.
